Andy Waite

Andy was born in 1954 and followed a career as a freelance graphic designer and sign writer, having studied at West Sussex College of Art & Design before turning to painting full time in 1988.

He has shown at the Minster Gallery on a regular basis for a number of years, successfully selling work from the small and exquisitely ethereal to the very large and dramatic canvas’s that capture the wildness of the Sussex skies.

Andy Waite’s landscapes draw from the tradition of the Romanticists while expressing an energy that is distinctly contemporary. These paintings immerse you in and are a celebration of the English landscape and all its elemental power.

Their abstracted quality and emotive spontaneity mean they do not always reveal themselves immediately, asking you to return and discover something not at first seen, drawing you in for an ongoing dialogue that slowly unfolds, while retaining their mystery. It is the spirituality of these works, unspoken conversations playing out, that embrace all the senses, in coming to terms with the imponderable nature of the earth beneath us and the sky above.

“The paintings speak of histories and experiences of the land, creative imagination being given free rein to spill onto the canvas. Some of the poetry of these works reveals itself through shifting layers, density of paint and juxtaposed colour. With an emotional and painterly engagement which connects to the Romanticists, living places and their abstracted memories are combined with an alchemy of colour, form and feeling.”
