“As Above So Below”
New Exhibition of Paintings
16th March – 29th April 2019
From 16th March until 29th April 2019, The Minster Gallery in Winchester will be exhibiting a selection of new paintings by Andy Waite. Yet again, Andy has produced a wonderful body of work representing a poetic celebration of the English sky and weather in all their elemental power.
Whilst drawing inspiration and feeling from a romantic tradition, Andy Waite’s contemporary land and skyscapes are essentially expressionistic in form, colour and energy.
The dynamic play of light and darkness in nature are mirrored by the emotions driving the painting process as the artist reflects and re-imagines both the gentle and tumultuous landscapes of earth and soul.
The abstract quality and emotive spontaneity within these images mean they do not always reveal themselves immediately, offering us an ongoing dialogue that gradually unfolds.
“The work is derived from drawings in response to the changing seasons. In the painting process, the work evolves naturally and one of the greatest joys is not knowing what the end result will be.”
Andy was born in 1954 and followed a career as a freelance graphic designer and sign writer, having studied at West Sussex College of Art & Design before turning to painting full time in 1988. He has had numerous solo exhibitions in galleries throughout England and in London as well as group shows, winning first prize, The Stride Open, in Chichester in 2008. This is his third one-man show at The Minster Gallery in Winchester.
