Masako Tobita

Masaka was born and raised in Japan.

After graduating from Joshibi University of Art and Design in Tokyo, she worked at an architectural office and a graphic design company.

When she moved to New York, Masaka realised that her main interest was in oil painting. She attended an evening drawing class at the Art Students League in Manhattan and began painting.

Since she settled in England in 1989, she has had more time to experiment and develop her work.

Masaka would say she paints instead of writing a diary.

“As the days begin, I pick up a brush, mix some colours and start making a first mark on a canvas, without knowing where it would lead to. My work is very much like an autobiography, layers of feelings about the past, the present and the future”.
